The Government of Canada has announced a major investment to support the revitalization of the Cartier sector in Laval, as part of its broader plan to strengthen infrastructure and increase housing supply across the country. The project is being funded through the Build Communities Strong Fund, a national initiative aimed at improving essential services and supporting long-term economic growth.
The fund, launched by Mark Carney, will provide $51 billion over the next 10 years for infrastructure projects across Canada. These investments are designed to support housing, transportation, healthcare, education, and climate adaptation, while also boosting economic activity and job creation nationwide.
As part of this initiative, the federal government is allocating $8 million for infrastructure upgrades in Laval’s Cartier sector. The project will focus on redeveloping key streets, including Labelle, d’Orly, and St-Hubert, along with the development of Labelle East Street. The work will involve replacing aging underground systems and upgrading the sanitary sewer network to improve reliability and increase capacity for future growth.
Officials say the improvements will help reduce the risk of infrastructure failures, enhance essential services, and create a more sustainable urban environment. The project is expected to support the development or preservation of nearly 1,790 housing units, helping to address housing demand in the region while promoting residential densification.
In addition to housing benefits, the redevelopment will improve mobility and overall quality of life for residents. Plans include better infrastructure for active transportation and greener urban spaces, contributing to a more livable and environmentally friendly community.
The investment is also expected to generate economic benefits by creating jobs in construction and related sectors, while encouraging further private and public investment in the area. By modernizing infrastructure and supporting housing development, the project aims to strengthen the local economy and prepare the community for future growth.
This initiative highlights the importance of infrastructure in building strong communities, ensuring that cities like Laval can continue to grow sustainably while meeting the needs of their residents.
