Kyrgyzstan has bolstered its regional engagement by taking part in the 5th Forum of Heads of Regions of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Issyk-Kul. This significant international event concentrated on fostering economic alliances, developing infrastructure, and promoting interregional collaboration under the banner of “Interregional Partnership in the SCO: 25 Years of Joint Development.”

Representing Kyrgyzstan at this high-profile gathering was Erlist Akunbekov, the Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Minister of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry. During the forum, he observed that over the past 25 years, the SCO has emerged as a pivotal platform for political, economic, and regional collaboration throughout Eurasia.

Akunbekov highlighted the vital role of regions and cities in establishing robust cooperation among SCO member states. He pointed out that these interregional partnerships have significantly enhanced trade relations, solidified business ties, and created avenues for collaborative projects among the countries involved.

Kyrgyz officials reported that trade volume between Kyrgyzstan and other SCO members has surged by more than 2.2 times over the four-year period. Several key infrastructure initiatives are underway in Kyrgyzstan, including the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway, the Bedel checkpoint on the Kyrgyz-Chinese border, and enhancements to the Barskoon-Bedel highway, alongside various energy sector projects.

These infrastructure developments are deemed strategically significant not just for Kyrgyzstan but for the entire SCO region, as they are anticipated to enhance connectivity, bolster transport links, and foster sustained economic growth throughout Central Asia and its neighboring markets.

The forum convened high-ranking representatives from several countries including Belarus, China, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, as well as officials from the SCO Secretariat. Delegates deliberated on ways to enhance investment cooperation, promote regional development initiatives, and foster economic integration among SCO member nations.

The event witnessed the signing of key agreements, such as a memorandum of cooperation between the Bishkek Free Economic Zone and Belarus' Brest Free Economic Zone, along with a new sister city agreement linking Bishkek with Zhengzhou, China. Additional cooperation agreements involving Kyrgyzstan’s Naryn Free Economic Zone were also finalized.

Kyrgyz authorities reaffirmed their commitment to advancing interregional cooperation within the SCO framework to create new pathways for trade, investment, infrastructure development, and enduring regional stability through stronger partnerships with neighboring nations.
