During stage 17 of the Giro d’Italia, Jhonatan Narváez took back the lead in the points race for UAE Team Emirates-XRG.
The cyclist from Ecuador resecured the maglia ciclamino, the coveted purple jersey for points, by claiming maximum points during the intermediate sprint on Wednesday's route.
With his performance, Narváez surpassed Paul Magnier from Soudal Quick-Step in the leaderboard. His impressive race strategy, which includes three stage wins, has been pivotal in earning the points jersey.
In stage 17, Narváez was part of an early breakaway alongside teammates Jan Christen and Igor Arrieta. The group collaborated effectively to set up Narváez for the sprint.
Arrieta played a crucial role in neutralizing a key attack, allowing Narváez to surge ahead and secure the maximum sprint points available. This victory reestablished Narváez at the pinnacle of the points classification, enabling him to wear the maglia ciclamino in stage 18.
UAE Team Emirates-XRG also aimed for additional stage wins, with Arrieta showcasing a strong effort in the breakaway, finishing close behind stage victor Michael Valgren of EF Education-EasyPost.
The day proved to be another successful chapter for UAE Team Emirates-XRG as they advanced their campaign in the Giro d’Italia.
