Renowned lyricist and writer Javed Akhtar has taken a strong stance against Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar following a controversial event involving a Muslim woman in Patna. Akhtar insists that the chief minister must issue an unconditional apology to the woman, whose veil was removed without her consent.

The incident occurred during the Samvad ceremony at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, which involved the distribution of appointment letters to new appointees. A video capturing the event has gone viral, showing Nitish Kumar questioning the woman’s naqab and ultimately removing it himself.

This incident has sparked a significant political and social discourse nationwide, with many accusing the chief minister of violating personal choices, religious customs, and a woman's dignity. The backlash has even drawn international attention, including remarks from several West Asian nations.

In response to the uproar, Akhtar shared a powerful message on X, asserting that although he has historically opposed the notion of parda or face coverings, he does not support coercing anyone into removing it.

He expressed that personal beliefs should never serve as justification for the humiliation or touching of an individual in a public setting. Akhtar labeled the act as entirely unacceptable, emphasizing that the woman was deserving of respect. He firmly stated that disagreement with a cultural tradition does not warrant the insult or embarrassment of its practitioners.

Akhtar also addressed criticisms directed at him regarding “selective outrage,” denying such claims and highlighting that he consistently speaks against regressive ideologies, even from within his own community. He dared critics to identify any of his works that portray women in a disrespectful manner.

An advocate for women's freedom and dignity, Akhtar previously questioned societal norms around the shame associated with women's faces, stressing that dignity is not contingent on being covered or uncovered.

The incident continues to pressure Nitish Kumar and his party, as leaders of opposition and social activists call for an apology and an examination of accountability. Furthermore, the controversy has renewed discussions surrounding personal choice, respect for religious practices, and the conduct expected from public officials.

As dialogue persists, many advocates are urging that the focus should remain on mutual respect and consent, particularly from those in positions of authority.
