In a disturbing escalation of hostilities, Iran executed missile and drone strikes aimed at Kuwait and Bahrain late Tuesday, rekindling fears for Gulf security.
Kuwait's state news outlet KUNA reported that authorities prompted residents to adhere to safety protocols and steer clear of any falling debris or unidentified objects post-attacks.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) indicated that two missiles launched toward Kuwait either did not reach their intended destination or disintegrated mid-air. Additionally, several ballistic missiles directed at other regional sites fell short, while US forces successfully intercepted three missiles aiming for Bahrain.
While neither Kuwait nor Bahrain has officially verified CENTCOM's details, Bahrain did announce the activation of warning sirens nationwide as a precautionary step.
According to CENTCOM, US forces managed to intercept Iranian drones targeting civilian vessels in regional waters and military personnel stationed in Kuwait. The US military also conducted retaliatory strikes on Qeshm Island, Iran, in response to attempted assaults.
Simultaneously, Iranian state media disclosed that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) had launched attacks on the US Fifth Fleet's headquarters in Bahrain. The IRGC further claimed to have targeted an airbase and helicopters in another regional nation. These actions were purportedly retaliatory measures against a US strike on a communications tower near Qeshm Island.
CENTCOM insisted that all Iranian strikes were ineffective, reiterating that US defenses are poised to counter what they characterize as "unprovoked Iranian aggression."
Since the conflict's onset in late February, Iran has persistently targeted territories housing US military personnel throughout the Gulf. These latest strikes come after prior assaults on Kuwait on May 28 and June 1.
Despite both Iran and the United States announcing a tentative accord last week to potentially halt the conflict, the agreement remains unratified.
Recent Iranian media reports suggest diminishing direct communication between Tehran and Washington. Yet, President Donald Trump has affirmed that dialogue continues amid rising military tensions, stating in a social media update that talks have been persistently ongoing over the past few days.
