China's Historic Astronaut Return Marks New Space Milestone

In a significant achievement for its space objectives, China successfully brought back three astronauts following a nearly seven-month stay at the Tiangong space station. This mission, completed by the Shenzhou-21 crew, stands as the longest continuous space journey ever undertaken by Chinese astronauts, reflecting the nation's escalation in human space exploration.

The spacecraft, carrying astronauts Zhang Lu, Wu Fei, and Zhang Hongzhang, touched down at the Dongfeng landing site in Inner Mongolia on May 29, 2026. Immediate recovery efforts were executed to assist the crew after their groundbreaking mission. This development is seen as a vital segment of China’s aspirations to send astronauts to the Moon by 2030.

During their extensive mission at the Tiangong space station, the astronauts engaged in numerous scientific experiments, technology demonstrations, maintenance, and other operations. They also managed the transfer of crucial research data and supplies in preparation for the next crew's arrival.

Among their notable feats, the mission recorded three successful spacewalks. Esteemed astronaut Zhang Lu solidified his legacy by completing his seventh spacewalk, edging ahead as the Chinese astronaut with the most spacewalks in history. This achievement illustrates China’s growing proficiency in executing complex extravehicular activities.

Upon returning, Zhang Lu conveyed his heartfelt gratitude to his family, fellow astronauts, and the plethora of engineers and scientists who supported their mission. His colleague, Zhang Hongzhang, remarked on the profound experience of observing Earth from orbit, emphasizing humanity's connectedness beyond boundaries.

The mission also ensured a seamless crew change as Shenzhou-21 astronauts imparted their valuable insights to the incoming Shenzhou-23 team. Notably, Lai Ka-ying became the first astronaut from Hong Kong to engage in a Chinese space mission, marking a historic event for the nation's space aspirations.
