A devastating fire at a girls' school dormitory in Kenya's Rift Valley has led to the tragic deaths of at least 15 students, as reported by police authorities.

The incident occurred at Utumishi Girls' Academy Senior School, situated in Gilgil town, Nakuru County. Reports indicate that multiple students sustained injuries, although the precise number has yet to be disclosed.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, and investigations are actively underway.

Footage from the scene captured broken windows, smoke-stained walls, and significant damage within the dormitory following the fire’s control.

Senior police commander Masoud Mwinyi informed journalists that approximately 50 officers have been deployed around the area to search for students who may have fled in fright during the event.

According to Mwinyi, many students panicked and ran from the dormitory as the fire broke out during the night.

Kenya has seen numerous deadly school fires in previous years. Official records indicate over 60 arson incidents in public secondary schools were reported in 2018 alone. Researchers have often linked these events to student protests regarding strict discipline and subpar living conditions.

In another tragic case in 2024, a boarding primary school fire in Nyeri County resulted in the loss of 21 students’ lives, with officials yet to confirm the fire's cause.

This recent tragedy has reignited discussions about the necessity for enhanced safety measures and emergency preparedness in Kenya's boarding schools.
