A tragic incident in Indonesia has resulted in the loss of all eight individuals aboard a helicopter, as confirmed by local authorities. The accident transpired in West Kalimantan, where the helicopter encountered communication issues shortly after leaving the ground, leading to a rapid deployment of emergency response teams.
The aircraft, identified as an Airbus H130, lost contact just five minutes following takeoff from a plantation site in Melawi. This abrupt disconnection sparked immediate concerns, prompting swift action from rescue teams to conduct search operations.
According to Mohammad Syafii, head of the rescue agency, the helicopter is thought to have gone down in a densely wooded area characterized by steep and difficult terrain. Initial searches have located debris believed to be part of the helicopter's tail, found a few kilometers from the last known position.
Authorities confirmed that all eight onboard—including six passengers and two crew members—perished in the accident. Recovery efforts for both bodies and additional wreckage are ongoing, hindered by the challenging, remote landscape.
The helicopter was reportedly operated by Matthew Air Nusantara, engaged in flight over a plantation owned by Citra Mahkota when the incident occurred. Details regarding the flight's purpose are still pending from officials.
Currently, the definitive cause of the crash is unknown. Investigators are expected to explore various factors, including weather conditions, potential mechanical failures, and pilot communication to ascertain the circumstances leading to this tragic incident.
Recovery teams, comprising military and police forces, are persistently working to reach the crash site to facilitate recovery operations. Officials have committed to a comprehensive investigation aimed at preventing future occurrences.
