Dr. Sumit Kapadia, a highly experienced vascular surgeon and varicose vein specialist, recently demonstrated an easy yet effective exercise via Instagram. In the video shared on November 29, Dr. Kapadia pointed out that performing ankle pumps for just a few minutes every hour can counteract vascular harm inflicted by prolonged sitting.
Extended seated situations negatively impact the vascular system due to decreased blood movement in the legs. “When you sit for extended stretches, the blood flow in your legs is compromised, leading to various issues,” noted Dr. Kapadia. Over time, this can culminate in complications including leg heaviness, swelling, varicose veins, circulatory problems, and in severe situations, an escalated danger of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), a perilous type of blood clot if not treated.
The ankle pump exercise is straightforward. Dr. Kapadia recommends moving ankles up and down 20 to 30 times every hour. This minor movement activates the calf muscles, known as the “peripheral heart,” assisting in propelling blood back to the heart. This entire exercise takes nearly 30 seconds, yet it significantly enhances circulation and leg wellness.
Incorporating ankle pumps into your routine can yield several benefits. It boosts blood circulation in the legs, mitigates swelling, reduces the likelihood of blood clots, and prevents end-of-day fatigue.
