In a stunning display of racing, French cyclist Benoît Cosnefroy achieved a commendable third place at the Amstel Gold Race, bringing glory to UAE Team Emirates-XRG.
Covering a grueling 257km from Maastricht to Valkenburg, the route was punctuated by 33 demanding climbs across the hilly Limburg landscape. The race commenced with a rapid tempo as an early group attempted to forge ahead, yet the peloton accelerated to reel them in before the concluding section.
Intensity peaked in the last 70km, particularly on ascents like Loorberg, Gulperberg, and Kruisberg. Key competitors including Remco Evenepoel and Mattias Skjelmose managed to break away from the pack.
The pivotal moment occurred during the Keutenberg climb, where Evenepoel and Skjelmose broke free, establishing a gap that proved insurmountable. They battled it out in a high-stakes sprint for the lead.
Meanwhile, Cosnefroy maintained focus within the pursuing group. Despite facing challenges, he raced astutely, sustaining his position as the race dynamics shifted, particularly near the final ascent of Cauberg.
At the finish line in Valkenburg, Evenepoel outpaced Skjelmose to claim first place. Cosnefroy's strategic timing allowed him to finish third, almost two minutes behind the winners.
The next installment of the Ardennes Classics, La Flèche Wallonne, is set to take place this Wednesday.
