Dubai is taking a significant step to enhance its role in the global agri-commodities market with the announcement of a new Cacao Centre by DMCC (Dubai Multi Commodities Centre). This initiative aims to establish a comprehensive ecosystem for cocoa trading and processing, emphasizing innovation.
The Cacao Centre will integrate the entire cocoa value chain, encompassing everything from sourcing and storing to processing, branding, distribution, and financing. This endeavor builds on the successful precedents set by DMCC in its coffee and tea sectors.
Currently, DMCC hosts 88 firms focusing on cocoa trading, chocolate production, and confectionery. The new centre is anticipated to consolidate and expand this thriving sector, improving both efficiency and global connectivity.
Collaborative Efforts
This project will develop in partnership with:
Kumbi Cocoa, dedicated to fostering fair and direct relationships with farmers
Ribezzi Group, a Dubai-based conglomerate spearheading project development
They will collaborate to create infrastructure in Dubai for the storage, trading, and processing of cocoa beans into semi-finished products such as cocoa liquor, cocoa butter, and cocoa powder.
Cutting-Edge Facilities and Services
The DMCC Cacao Centre will provide:
Grading and quality management
Storage and blending facilities
Packaging and marketing services
Access to financial solutions via DMCC’s FinX platform
This support is essential for cocoa producers, cooperatives, and traders faced with pricing pressures and restricted access to finance.
Expanding Global Market
The global cocoa sector is on a fast track:
Valued at $16.6 billion in 2025
Projected to reach $26.2 billion by 2035
Moreover, the premium chocolate segment is also witnessing a surge in popularity due to rising demands for high-quality and health-conscious offerings.
Dubai’s Growing Influence
Dubai is carving out its niche in the cocoa market, exhibiting notable growth:
The UAE imported $17.3 million in raw cocoa beans in 2023
Imported $65.3 million in finished cocoa products
Exported $16.4 million in raw beans
These figures highlight the increasing activity via Dubai.
Addressing Global Disparities
Currently, West African nations account for approximately 75% of the world’s cocoa, while they receive a limited proportion of its total value. The DMCC Cacao Centre helps bridge this gap by connecting farmers directly with global markets, as well as offering financing and value-added services.
With robust logistics, warehousing solutions, and trade finance options, Dubai positions itself as a pivotal hub for a more transparent, efficient, and equitable global cocoa marketplace.
