Beloved actress Dipika Kakar, known for her iconic role in Sasural Simar Ka, has bravely shared her ongoing fight against liver cancer. In an emotional interview on Bharti Singh and Haarsh Limbachiyaa’s widely followed podcast, she opened up about her diagnosis, treatment path, and the significant impact the illness has had on her family.
Confronting Diagnosis with Strength and Determination
Dipika described her shock at receiving the diagnosis, noting that both she and her doctors were taken aback. “My surgeon, Dr. Somnath Chattopadhyay, along with my family doctor, Dr. Tushar Shah, were thoroughly surprised. They could not fathom how this could have happened,” she recalled. While some toxic exposure was considered possible, the exact cause remained undefined. Dipika herself pondered, “I’ve never smoked and always aimed for a healthy lifestyle. While I enjoy eating, it isn’t extreme or unhealthy.”
Initial Symptoms and Misdiagnosis
She shared how the initial signs were misinterpreted as gallbladder discomfort, which emerged during her pregnancy with her son, Ruhaan. During that time, medical screenings primarily prioritized the baby, and her liver function appeared normal.
Post-delivery, the discomfort intensified, causing severe pain across her abdomen. “The agony became unbearable, and I told my husband Shoaib that something was very wrong,” she recounted. Initially treated for acidity, further evaluations eventually followed due to no improvement.
Identification of the Tumor
Subsequent tests, including a CT scan, showed not only gallbladder stones but also a concerning 9-centimeter tumor in her liver. Although her doctor started her on medication to alleviate her symptoms, further tests indicated the severity of her situation.
She highlighted the significance of advanced imaging in her diagnosis: “In the beginning of November, I’ll undergo another FAPI scan. This technique, while akin to a CT scan, is specifically effective in identifying cancer cells, providing insights into the progression before treatments begin.”
Treatment Progress and Current Condition
After undergoing surgery that successfully removed around 22% of her liver along with the 11-centimeter tumor, Dipika felt immense relief that the cancer had remained localized. “Last FAPI scan showed no visible cancer elsewhere,” she affirmed.
Currently, she is undergoing oral targeted therapy, akin to chemotherapy, aimed at battling cancer cells and preventing recurrence. This regimen is expected to persist for a two-year duration. Regular monitoring through blood tests and tumor marker evaluations has yielded positive results so far, with no signs of cancer’s return.
Looking Forward: Persistence and Optimism
Dipika stressed the critical need for continuous monitoring as part of her recovery. “We have been consistently tracking my condition, and I’m fortunate that the results have been normal. However, regular scans are essential to stay proactive,” she mentioned.
Despite the emotional toll, Dipika embodies resilience and hope, drawing strength from her faith and family support throughout this arduous journey. Her candidness regarding her health challenges has resonated deeply with fans, inspiring many facing similar battles.
