Legal Hurdles Emerge for Ranveer Singh's Dhurandhar Ahead of Debut

Ranveer Singh’s eagerly awaited spy thriller, Dhurandhar, directed by Aditya Dhar and set to premiere on December 5, 2025, is entangled in a legal controversy. The parents of the late Major Mohit Sharma, a posthumous Ashoka Chakra and Sena Medal recipient, assert that the film portrays their son's life without permission.

Tensions escalated following the trailer’s launch, which depicted a lead character partaking in covert military endeavors. Observers noted striking resemblances to Major Sharma, who served in the 1 Para (Special Forces) and was killed in action in Kupwara, Jammu and Kashmir on March 21, 2009. Major Sharma is renowned for his valor and sacrifice, earning national reverence.

Despite the director's defense stating the film is “wholly fictional,” Major Sharma’s parents took their fight to the Delhi High Court, alleging that their son’s life is being treated as a “commercial commodity.” Concerns about privacy and national security have also been raised, warning that showcasing Special Forces missions might compromise sensitive data.

The legal notice implicates several parties including the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the Additional Directorate General of Public Information (ADGPI), Jio Studios, producer Jyoti Deshpande, and director Aditya Dhar, with a request for a postponement of the film’s release.

In defense of the filmmakers, legal representatives refuted any ties between the film and Major Sharma’s narrative, stressing it is a fictional endeavor. The CBFC has confirmed the film's review process categorized it as fictional.

While the Delhi High Court hasn't halted the release, it mandated that the CBFC carefully evaluate the family's concerns and consult with the Indian Army if deemed necessary prior to final certification.

Dhurandhar features an ensemble cast including Ranveer Singh, Arjun Rampal, Sanjay Dutt, Akshaye Khanna, and Sara Arjun. Fans and critics are now eagerly anticipating whether the film will hit the theaters as planned or experience unexpected delays.
