Bollywood star Deepika Padukone has found herself at the center of an online controversy after appearing in a new Abu Dhabi tourism commercial. The ad, produced by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, also features her husband and fellow actor Ranveer Singh, with both serving as brand ambassadors for the city.

The Ad and Its Setting

The promotional video showcases the couple exploring iconic Abu Dhabi landmarks, including the Louver Abu Dhabi and the Sheik Zayed Grand Mosque. While admiring artwork and architecture, the two share moments of laughter and cultural curiosity.

Deepika was seen in a red abaya covering her body except for her face and hands, while Ranveer donned a black suit. Her attire became the focal point of social media discussions soon after the campaign was released.

Social Media Reactions

A section of online users criticized Deepika, mistaking her attire for a hijab. Critics linked the look to her past advocacy for women’s freedom of choice in the 2015 short film My Choice. Others accused her of inconsistency in her public image.

However, many fans and supporters were quick to defend her, clarifying that the garment was not a hijab but an abaya – a traditional requirement for women visiting the Sheik Zayed Grand Mosque. They emphasized that such attire is mandatory for all female visitors, regardless of nationality or faith.

Respect for Cultural Traditions

Supporters highlighted that Deepika and Ranveer have long displayed respect for religious and cultural norms across different communities. During their first wedding anniversary in 2019, the couple visited the Lord Venkateswara Temple in Tirumala and the Golden Temple in Amritsar, both dressed in traditional attire.

Deepika wore a red Kanjeevaram saree at Tirumala and a maroon salwar-kameez with a dupatta covering her head at Amritsar, while Ranveer appeared in temple-appropriate clothing. The pair also sought blessings at Mumbai’s Siddhivinayak Temple in September 2024, shortly before the birth of their daughter, Dua.

A Recurring Pattern of Trolling

This is not the first time the actress has faced online scrutiny over her fashion choices. In 2023, Deepika was subjected to widespread trolling for her appearance in the Pathaan song Besharam Rang, where her costume choices triggered a national debate.

Silent Amid the Debate

As of now, Deepika Padukone has not issued any public statement addressing the backlash over the Abu Dhabi ad. The discussion continues online, reflecting the ongoing intersection of celebrity, culture, and personal choice in the digital age.
