Mumbai Surgeon Warns: Daily Instant Noodle Consumption Can Affect Your Health

Instant noodles are a staple quick meal throughout India and globally, prized for their affordability and ease of preparation. Whether for students, busy professionals, or those living alone, they are a favored choice. However, healthcare experts caution against frequent consumption, citing significant health concerns.

Dr. Manan Vora, an orthopaedic surgeon from Mumbai, recently elaborated on the potential health impacts in a video shared on December 1. He noted that while enjoying them occasionally is acceptable, regular consumption can gradually harm one’s health. He emphasized the importance of transitioning to wholesome foods for better gut health, energy stability, and longevity.

Dr. Vora criticized instant noodles as ultra-processed items, filled with synthetic chemicals and preservatives. Although these additives enhance taste and prolong shelf life, they can burden the body.

A significant ingredient of concern is TBHQ, a preservative that helps maintain freshness in packaged foods. While it prevents rancidity in oils, frequent intake has been associated with oxidative stress, which can weaken cells and heighten susceptibility to health issues.

Additionally, many instant noodles come in polystyrene cups. When hot water is added, microplastics may leach into the noodles. Dr. Vora highlighted that these microplastics could enter the digestive system, causing inflammation and gut irritation, ultimately affecting digestion and overall health.

Artificial flavors, colors, and MSG (monosodium glutamate) are commonly present in instant noodles. These substances not only enhance flavor but can also lead to cravings for unhealthy foods. Despite MSG being generally safe in moderation, consistent consumption of such additives may diminish the appetite for healthier meals. Dr. Vora pointed out that these noodles are designed to be shelf-stable rather than nutritious.

This warning resonates particularly with younger demographics. Teens and young professionals often turn to instant noodles for their convenience and low cost. Nevertheless, habitual consumption may lead to chronic problems, including digestive issues, reduced energy, and increased body inflammation.

Experts strongly recommend opting for natural and home-cooked meals. Simple recipes featuring dal, rice, eggs, vegetables, or rotis offer superior nutrition and help maintain consistent energy levels. Consuming real food bolsters the immune system and promotes overall well-being.

While instant noodles can provide comfort, they shouldn't substitute balanced diets. Dr. Vora's advice is definitive: savor them sparingly, but avoid making them a staple in your diet. Your body requires nourishing, fresh food to thrive and be robust.
