Batam's Crackdown: Foreign Workers Detained for Permit Violations

Post by : Shakul

In a significant enforcement action, Indonesian authorities have ramped up inspections in the Riau Islands, leading to the detention of multiple foreign nationals for allegedly working without the necessary permits in Batam's industrial and construction sectors.

Officials from the Batam Immigration Office confirmed that between March and April 10, six foreigners, primarily five Chinese and one Malaysian national, were apprehended during these operations aimed at tightening control.

This operation spotlighted foreign workers suspected of misusing their stay permits by engaging in unauthorized employment based on their visa categories.

Preliminary investigations unveiled that two Chinese individuals were engaged in work at an industrial estate despite holding limited stay permits that prohibit employment.

Further inspections in early April culminated in the apprehension of three more Chinese nationals at a construction site, where they were allegedly conducting technical tasks under B211 visit visas, typically designated for business, not employment.

Moreover, separate actions saw immigration authorities in Ranai deporting two Malaysian nationals discovered working in ship repair without valid permits.

Officials reiterated that these enforcement measures align with their ongoing efforts to ensure immigration law compliance and prevent visa misuse in essential economic zones.

The authorities have pledged to maintain stringent oversight of foreign workers, ensuring adherence to local labor regulations and upholding legal employment standards.
