Canadian authorities have reported a seizure of contraband and unauthorized items at Dorchester Penitentiary, specifically in its minimum security unit. The operation took place on March 28, 2026, and was carried out by staff from Correctional Service Canada.
According to officials, a package containing illegal substances was intercepted due to the alertness and vigilance of correctional staff. The seized items included tobacco, cannabis concentrate known as “shatter,” and crystal methamphetamine. Authorities estimated the institutional value of the recovered items at approximately $75,050, indicating a significant attempt to introduce drugs into the facility.
Correctional Service Canada stated that preventing contraband from entering its institutions remains a top priority. Officials emphasized that such items pose serious risks to the safety of inmates, staff, and visitors, and can disrupt the secure operation of correctional facilities.
To address these risks, the agency uses a range of security tools and procedures. These include ion scanners that can detect traces of drugs and specially trained detector dogs used to search buildings, inmates, visitors, and personal belongings. These measures are part of a broader strategy to strengthen institutional security and reduce illegal activity within prisons.
Authorities also work closely with law enforcement agencies to investigate and take action against individuals involved in smuggling contraband into correctional facilities. Officials noted that cooperation between agencies is essential in preventing and responding to such incidents.
In addition, Correctional Service Canada has established a confidential tip line for reporting suspicious or illegal activities related to prison security. The toll-free number allows individuals to share information anonymously, helping authorities identify and address potential threats more effectively.
Officials confirmed that efforts to enhance security measures will continue, with the goal of maintaining a safe and controlled environment within correctional institutions across Canada.
