Paris, November 29, 2025 – The renowned Cinematheque Française, a cornerstone of Parisian cinema, has announced a month-long closure of its screening venues due to a bedbug infestation that reportedly affected event attendees, including those at a masterclass led by the esteemed actress Sigourney Weaver.

This shutdown, effective this Friday, will encompass all four of the cinema's screening rooms, which serve both public film showings and educational programming. The management emphasized that this decision prioritizes the health and comfort of every visitor.

The issue arose in early November, when multiple attendees reported bites from bedbugs during Weaver's event. One participant detailed to Le Parisien that bedbugs were observed crawling on seats and attendees’ clothing, raising significant anxiety in the crowd.

To tackle the infestation, the Cinematheque plans a comprehensive treatment regimen, including dismantling and steam-cleaning all seating at 180°C several times. Carpets too will undergo similar intensive sanitization, and specially trained canine units will be brought in to ensure the buildings are entirely pest-free.

While the screening halls will be closed, other areas of the Cinematheque, such as the ongoing exhibition on acclaimed filmmaker and actor Orson Welles, will still be accessible to the public.

Bedbugs, known to seek shelter in mattresses, clothing, and luggage, can inflict painful red rashes, blisters, and itching. Their presence can also lead to significant mental health challenges, including sleep disturbances, anxiety, and depression.

In recent years, France has ramped up efforts to address rising bedbug reports, particularly as the nation prepares for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Authorities have pointed out the influence of false information spread by foreign-linked networks as a factor in increasing public concerns.

The proactive measure taken by the Cinematheque Française underscores its dedication to ensuring visitor safety while confronting the broader issue of bedbug invasions in urban settings.
