China Delegates Military Experts to Shangri-La Dialogue, Skips Minister Attendance

Once again, China will not be sending its defence minister, Dong Jun, to the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, opting instead to appoint a team of military scholars to represent its interests.

Set to commence this week, the Shangri-La Dialogue is noted as a pivotal security summit in the Asia-Pacific, engaging various defence ministers, military leaders, and diplomats for critical discussions on global security and regional stability.

For the second consecutive year, China’s Defence Minister Dong Jun will be absent, with China's Ministry of National Defence declaring that Major General Meng Xiangqing from the National Defence University will lead the delegation.

As noted by spokesperson Jiang Bin, the team will encompass experts from institutions like the National Defence University, the Academy of Military Sciences, and the Chinese Navy. Their role will involve conveying China’s defensive strategies and collaborative initiatives during the conference.

Jiang further emphasized China's dedication to fostering defence cooperation in the Asia-Pacific and maintaining open dialogue among nations. The delegation aims to build mutual trust, lessen misunderstandings, and enhance collaboration with regional allies.

The absence of Dong Jun has piqued global interest, particularly following 2024 reports regarding his alleged involvement in a corruption probe. Chinese officials have dismissed these allegations, branding them as falsehoods.

This year's summit will address pressing issues such as regional strife, military alliances, maritime safety, and ongoing geopolitical struggles, with notable attendees including US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Historically, the Shangri-La Dialogue provides a unique venue for military leaders from rival countries to engage directly. Analysts suggest that China’s choice not to send its defence minister could hinder significant defence diplomacy opportunities at the event.

In parallel, China hosts the Xiangshan Forum, viewed as its alternative to the Shangri-La Dialogue, aimed at showcasing its own security approach and bolstering military cooperation with global partners.
