China Pushes for Reevaluation of UNIFIL Withdrawal from Lebanon

Fu Cong has called for a reexamination of the decision regarding the withdrawal of the United Nations peacekeeping forces from Lebanon as regional tensions continue to escalate. His remarks were made during a session at the United Nations headquarters in New York on May 2, 2026.

China's appeal comes at a time when Lebanon's situation remains precarious despite an announced ceasefire. Fu Cong pointed out that the current state does not reflect a genuine ceasefire, referring to it as merely a reduction in conflict rather than a full return to peace.

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, commonly referred to as UNIFIL, has been vital in maintaining stability in southern Lebanon for many years. Initially established to oversee the withdrawal of Israeli forces, the mission was expanded following the 2006 clashes between Israel and Hezbollah.

Recently, the United Nations Security Council made a decision to begin the gradual withdrawal of UNIFIL forces, with a complete conclusion to the mission anticipated by December 2026. This resolution is now facing scrutiny from several member states due to escalating security concerns.

Fu Cong noted that a number of Security Council members feel it is premature to remove peacekeeping troops, insisting that UNIFIL's presence is crucial for sustaining stability and staving off further conflict in the region.

The situation in Lebanon has deteriorated dramatically over the past few months, highlighted by ongoing airstrikes and violent exchanges. Reports indicate that thousands of lives have been lost, with over a million people displaced as a result of the violence.

UN peacekeepers have confronted significant dangers amidst the ongoing conflict, suffering casualties while engaged in vital tasks. Numerous personnel from various nations have been hurt or killed during missions such as demining and humanitarian support.

Antonio Guterres has vocally criticized the assaults on peacekeepers, asserting that they were fulfilling critical responsibilities when they came under attack. He has advocated for enhanced protections for UN staff in active conflict regions.

China has announced that it will await a comprehensive report from the United Nations prior to finalizing its stance, but it has conveyed the urgent need for a careful reassessment of the withdrawal initiative to uphold peace and stability in the area.
