In an elegant ceremony held in Nikko, Japan, the Louvre Abu Dhabi, partnering with Richard Mille, declared Ryoichi Kurokawa the winner of the fifth Richard Mille Art Prize. Recognized from a competitive shortlist featured in Art Here 2025, Kurokawa was awarded a US$60,000 prize for his innovative installation, skadw-.

skadw- offers a transformative experience, turning shadows into a striking artistic environment. Using light, sound, and drifting fog, the installation creates a shifting panorama where shadows emerge with a palpable presence. A delicate beam of light navigates through layers of mist, crafting fleeting patterns that both appear and fade, allowing viewers to experience absence and space as tangible concepts.

Inspired by the Japanese idea of Ma, which honors the significance of intervals and voids, Kurokawa perceives shadow not merely as a side effect of light but as a tangible force influencing perception.

Manuel Rabaté, Director of Louvre Abu Dhabi, remarked: “skadw- beautifully confronts the theme of ‘Shadows’ with both emotional depth and meticulous form, upholding the award’s dedication to artistic brilliance and innovation.”

Tilly Harrison, Managing Director of Richard Mille Middle East, commented, “Kurokawa’s work seamlessly blends Japanese traditions with global viewpoints, enriching cultural exchange in contemporary art.”

The selection jury featured respected individuals, including His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, Dr. Guilhem André, Maya Allison, Sophie Mayuko Arni, and Yuko Hasegawa, ensuring a thorough evaluation process.

Dr. André emphasized the innovative approaches of this year’s artists, noting how Art Here intertwines modern works with the architecture of Louvre Abu Dhabi. Sophie Mayuko Arni highlighted skadw- as one of the most popular exhibits, showcasing the significant role of technology and new media in contemporary creativity.

Grateful for the recognition, Ryoichi Kurokawa stated: “skadw- enables shadows to guide perception, imparting presence to absence. I feel privileged to present my work to varied audiences.”

This year’s Art Here 2025 attracted over 400 submissions from artists across the GCC, Japan, and MENA regions, with notable works by Ahmed Alaqra, Jumairy, Rintaro Fuse, Hamra Abbas, and the duo YOKOMAE et BOUAYAD displayed at the Louvre Abu Dhabi until December 28.

Art Here remains a premier platform for contemporary artists, showcasing innovative perspectives and nurturing cross-cultural artistic dialogues.
