Canada Plans 175,000 Jobs And Skills For Youth

The Government of Canada has announced a major initiative to create 175,000 jobs and skills-building opportunities for young people across the country in 2026. The move aims to help youth gain work experience, develop skills, and prepare for long-term careers.

The announcement was made by Patty Hajdu, who said the program is designed to support young Canadians at every stage of their journey—from education and training to securing their first job. The government believes that investing in youth is key to building a strong economy and future workforce.

As part of the plan, the government will continue financial support for students. This includes maintaining a 40% increase in Canada Student Grants for different categories of students, including those studying full-time, part-time, and those with disabilities or dependents. In addition, the weekly student loan limit will rise from $210 to $300 for the 2026–27 academic year. Interest on student and apprenticeship loans has already been permanently removed, making education more affordable.

The initiative also focuses on helping young people find their first job. Around 100,000 positions will be offered through the Canada Summer Jobs program, with listings available on the government’s Job Bank platform starting April 20. These roles are expected to provide valuable work experience and help youth enter the workforce with confidence.

To further support career development, the government will create 55,000 work-integrated learning opportunities for post-secondary students through programs like the Student Work Placement Program. These opportunities will allow students to gain hands-on experience related to their field of study.

Additionally, more than 20,000 opportunities will be available under the Youth Employment and Skills Strategy (YESS), which focuses on helping young people who face barriers to employment. The government is also investing in initiatives like the Future Skills Centre, which provides mentorship, career guidance, and training programs.

Anna Gainey emphasized that young Canadians are ready to contribute to the country’s growth and need the right support to succeed. She noted that these opportunities will help them build strong, long-term careers while also strengthening the national economy.

Officials say the combined measures will not only improve employment prospects for youth but also help businesses access skilled workers. The initiative is expected to play an important role in shaping Canada’s workforce by equipping young people with the knowledge, experience, and connections they need to succeed in a competitive job market.
