Canada recently welcomed a special guest—His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). He visited from June 19 to 20, 2025, and was hosted by Canada’s Foreign Minister, Anita Anand. The visit showed how strong the friendship between Canada and the UAE has become, as both countries discussed ways to work together more in trade, technology, education, and peacebuilding.
During the visit, Sheikh Abdullah also met Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. He gave the Prime Minister an invitation from the President of the UAE to visit their country later this year.
A new Dubai Chambers office has opened in Toronto, making it the first one in North America. This will help businesses in both countries work together more easily. Canada’s Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu and UAE’s Envoy Sultan Al Mansoori attended the launch.
Both countries praised the work of the Canada-UAE Business Council and said they will continue to grow their business partnerships. They aim to finish a Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPA) soon, which will help businesses feel safer investing in each other’s countries.
Canada and the UAE talked about the future of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Canada recently appointed a new minister just for AI and digital innovation, and the UAE was the first country ever to have a Minister of AI. Both sides agreed that they should work together to create smart, safe, and fair technology for everyone.
Both countries also agreed to fight water problems around the world. They mentioned the upcoming 2026 UN Water Conference that the UAE will host with Senegal. The UAE’s new water-saving projects and Canada’s innovation in clean water technology are important parts of this mission.
In energy, both nations want to move toward cleaner and safer sources. They talked about working together on natural gas, hydrogen, nuclear power, and important minerals that are needed for green technology. The UAE is already investing a lot in Canada’s energy projects.
Canada and the UAE share the goal of making the world a safer place. They want to stop war, protect human rights, and work through peace talks. They both said all acts of terrorism must be condemned and stressed the need for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, the release of all hostages, and quick delivery of help to people in need.
They also want peace between Israel and Iran and said the best way forward is to follow international laws and promote respect between nations.
Canada and the UAE are using a special group called the Joint Committee for Cooperation to plan and run new projects together. They will focus on areas like trade, security, and climate change. Canada will host the next big meeting of this group soon.
Both nations promised to help people in crisis zones. The UAE was praised for sending the most aid to Gaza and helping prisoners of war in Ukraine. Canada and the UAE said they want to keep working together to protect human rights and bring peace in troubled places.
Canada and the UAE also celebrated their growing friendships between people. More Emirati students are studying in Canada, and about 60,000 Canadians live and work in the UAE. Both sides want to encourage more cultural exchange and friendship.
One example was an art show called “As the Sun Appears from Beyond,” held in Toronto. It showed the beauty of modern Islamic art and brought the two cultures closer.
This visit showed that Canada and the UAE are true partners. They want to keep growing their friendship in ways that help both their people and the whole world. Their shared dreams for peace, technology, and development are bringing them even closer.
