Canada Approves Emergency Aid For Peguis First Nation

The Government of Canada has approved emergency assistance to support Peguis First Nation as the community faces an increased risk of flooding due to rising temperatures and seasonal snowmelt. The announcement was made by Eleanor Olszewski, Minister of Emergency Management and Community Resilience.

Officials stated that warmer weather combined with rainfall is accelerating the spring melt in the Fisher River basin, raising concerns about possible flooding in Peguis First Nation and nearby areas in Manitoba. In response, the federal government approved a Request for Federal Assistance submitted by the Province of Manitoba to help the community prepare for potential flood conditions.

Support is being provided through Indigenous Services Canada under its Emergency Management Assistance Program. This includes funding for on-the-ground flood mitigation efforts such as sandbagging, as well as administrative and engineering support based on the needs identified by the community.

As part of the response, Team Rubicon has been deployed to assist with emergency preparations. The organization will help strengthen local flood defenses and support community efforts to reduce potential damage.

The federal Government Operations Centre is also actively coordinating with provincial and federal partners to ensure that necessary resources and support are available. Authorities emphasized that close cooperation between all levels of government is essential to effectively manage the situation.

Minister Olszewski confirmed that she remains in regular contact with provincial leaders, including Manitoba’s premier, and reiterated the federal government’s commitment to assisting affected communities. Officials stated that preparations will continue as conditions evolve, with the goal of protecting residents and minimizing the impact of possible flooding.

The situation remains under close monitoring as authorities work to ensure that Peguis First Nation is equipped to respond to any emergency developments in the coming days.
