Calgary police have launched a major homicide investigation after the bodies of two young children were discovered inside a vehicle in northwest Calgary on Thursday morning. Authorities confirmed that one man has been taken into custody as investigators work to determine exactly what happened in the heartbreaking case.
According to the Calgary Police Service, officers received a phone call shortly after 10 a.m. that led them to the 4300 block of 14th Street NW, one of the city’s busy northwest roads. When police arrived at the location, they found a parked vehicle and discovered the bodies of two deceased children inside. Officials said the deaths are being treated as suspicious, and the homicide unit has now taken over the investigation.
Police said the two victims are believed to be under the age of 10, although their identities have not yet been officially confirmed. Investigators are still working to identify the children and contact family members. Authorities have not yet released details about how the children died or how long they may have been inside the vehicle before they were found.
Calgary Police Service Inspector Darren Smith described the incident as extremely heartbreaking for everyone involved. Speaking to reporters near the scene, Smith said officers responding to the case were deeply affected by the discovery. He added that investigators do not currently believe there is any ongoing risk to public safety.
A man was arrested near the scene and remains in police custody. However, officials have not yet announced any criminal charges or explained the relationship between the suspect and the children. Investigators are continuing interviews and collecting evidence before releasing further information publicly.
Following the discovery, police closed parts of 14th Street NW for several hours while homicide detectives, forensic teams, and the medical examiner carried out their investigation. Emergency crews and investigators could be seen searching the area and removing evidence from the scene throughout the day. Traffic in the area was heavily affected as police rerouted vehicles around the investigation zone.
The tragic case has shocked residents across Calgary and quickly became one of the most discussed stories in Canada on Thursday. Many local residents expressed sadness and disbelief after hearing that two young children had been found dead inside a vehicle in a residential part of the city. Social media was also filled with messages of sympathy for the victims and concern about the ongoing investigation.
Police have asked anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the area or who may have security camera footage from Thursday morning to contact investigators. Authorities say the investigation is still in its early stages and more information is expected to be released once autopsies and forensic examinations are completed.
