Two years after Dream Girl 2 (2023), Ayushmann Khurrana made a blockbuster return to theatres this Diwali with Thamma. The horror-comedy, co-starring Rashmika Mandanna, marked both actors’ debut in the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe (MHCU) — a cinematic world that began with Stree (2018) and expanded through Bhediya (2022) and Munjya (2024).
As expected from Maddock’s signature world, Thamma is packed with witty Easter eggs and crossovers. Fans were thrilled by references to Stree and Munjya, along with Varun Dhawan’s surprise cameo as Bhediya and Abhishek Banerjee’s reprisal of his beloved Stree character, Jana.
The film has clearly struck a chord with audiences — just one week post-release, Thamma has officially entered the ₹100 crore club, a significant feat for Ayushmann who’s known for his genre-bending performances.
To celebrate the milestone, Maddock Films shared a video teasing a possible crossover within the universe. The caption read, “We can totally picture Bittu and Alok in MHCU like this.” The reference was to Aparshakti Khurana’s Stree character Bittu and Ayushmann’s Thamma role, Alok — a fun nod to the fact that the on-screen duo are also real-life brothers.
Ayushmann revealed that the hilarious meta moment referencing Bittu wasn’t part of the original script. “That scene was written at the last minute, and it was either Amar Kaushik or Abhishek Banerjee who came up with it. It was tough to keep a straight face — we needed a couple of takes because I kept laughing,” he shared.
He further added, “I’m really looking forward to crossing paths with my brother. It would be crazy.”
With Thamma’s roaring success and the growing anticipation for a full-blown MHCU crossover, fans can’t wait to see Alok and Bittu share the screen in the next chapter of Maddock’s ever-expanding horror-comedy saga.
