Former Manchester United and England defender Ashley Young has officially announced his retirement from professional football, bringing an end to a successful career that lasted more than two decades. The 40-year-old confirmed that he will retire at the end of the current season after playing his final matches for Ipswich Town.
Young shared the emotional announcement through social media and club statements, saying his football journey had been a dream come true. The experienced defender said he was proud of everything he achieved during his 23-year career and thanked fans, teammates, coaches, and family members who supported him throughout the years.
During his long professional career, Young played for several major clubs including Watford, Aston Villa, Manchester United, Inter Milan, Everton, and most recently Ipswich Town. He made more than 750 club appearances and scored 88 goals across domestic and international competitions.
Young first rose to prominence after beginning his senior career with Watford in 2003. His performances later earned him a move to Aston Villa, where he became one of the Premier League’s top attacking players and won the PFA Young Player of the Year award in 2009. His impressive displays eventually led to a transfer to Manchester United in 2011.
At Manchester United, Young enjoyed the most successful period of his club career. He helped the club win the Premier League title during the 2012-13 season under legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson. Young also won the FA Cup, League Cup, and UEFA Europa League with the club. Over time, he successfully changed his playing role from winger to full-back and later became club captain.
After leaving Manchester United, Young joined Inter Milan in Italy, where he added another major trophy to his career by winning the Serie A title in the 2020-21 season. His success in Italy made him one of the few English players to win league titles in both England and Italy.
On the international stage, Young represented England national football team 39 times and scored seven goals for his country. He played in major international tournaments including UEFA Euro 2012 and the 2018 FIFA World Cup. His versatility, leadership, and experience made him an important figure in the England squad for several years.
In recent seasons, Young continued playing professionally despite his age, becoming one of the oldest active players in English football. He joined Ipswich Town in 2025 and hoped to help the club secure promotion before ending his playing career. However, injuries limited his appearances during the final months of the season.
Football fans, former teammates, and clubs across England and Europe have paid tribute to Young after his retirement announcement. Many supporters praised his professionalism, consistency, and ability to adapt throughout different stages of his career. Social media was filled with messages celebrating his achievements and contribution to English football.
Ashley Young retires as one of the most respected English footballers of his generation. From his early days at Watford to winning trophies with Manchester United and Inter Milan, his career reflected longevity, discipline, and success at the highest level of football.
