Argentina Investigates Hantavirus Outbreak Linked to Antarctic Cruise

Post by : Bianca Hayes

In Argentina, health authorities are delving into a potential hantavirus outbreak related to a cruise ship currently docked offshore after setting sail for Antarctica.

Passengers began exhibiting signs associated with hantavirus shortly after departure, prompting officials to investigate the origins and spread of this rare, yet serious rodent-borne disease.

This inquiry comes on the heels of a troubling spike in hantavirus cases nationwide. The Ministry of Health indicates that since June 2025, there have been 101 reported cases, nearly double the previous year.

Many health experts speculate that climate change might be impacting rodent populations and their habitats, contributing to the surge in cases.

The World Health Organization ranks Argentina among the countries with the highest hantavirus prevalence in Latin America.

Human transmission typically occurs through contact with infected rodent excrement, urine, or saliva. In severe instances, it may lead to significant respiratory issues and can be fatal if not promptly addressed.

Health officials are actively monitoring conditions aboard the cruise ship as investigations continue.
