A grieving family in Chestermere, Alberta, is pleading for the return of their grandmother’s ashes after they were stolen during a home break-in just days before her funeral. The family says the ashes hold no value to thieves but are priceless to those who loved her.
Anna Thompson passed away last month at the age of 74, only days before Christmas. Her daughter, Deanna Thompson, described her mother as the heart of the family and a deeply respected member of the local community. The family received Anna’s ashes on Dec. 23 and was preparing to lay her to rest when the break-in occurred.
According to the family, the theft happened early Tuesday morning at Deanna’s brother’s home. Thieves reportedly entered through the backyard, forced open a rear door and stole several items, including an iPad, cash and tools. At first, the family believed the loss was limited to those items.
Later that day, they discovered something far more devastating was missing — Anna Thompson’s ashes. Deanna said the realization was shocking and heartbreaking, adding that it never crossed their minds that someone would take something so personal and irreplaceable.
The home does not have security cameras, but footage from a neighbouring house shows individuals the family believes may be linked to the break-in. In the video, one person appears to be dressed as a worker, allowing them to blend into the neighbourhood without drawing attention.
The family is now publicly appealing to those responsible, asking them to return the ashes anonymously if necessary so they can proceed with the funeral and find closure. Police continue to investigate the break-in, while the family hopes compassion will lead to the safe return of their loved one’s remains.
