Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has categorically dismissed Russia’s allegations that Ukraine executed a drone strike on one of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s residences. Zelensky accused Moscow of spreading false narratives aimed at derailing crucial peace discussions.
Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov alleged that Kyiv launched 91 long-range drones in a coordinated overnight operation targeting Putin’s official residence in the Novgorod region of northwest Russia. Lavrov claimed that Russian air defenses intercepted and neutralized all drones, reporting no injuries or property damage.
Lavrov expressed that, due to what he termed the “ultimate deterioration” of Ukraine’s administration, Russia might reassess its position in peace talks. Nonetheless, he reassured that Russia has no intention of withdrawing from negotiations with the United States.
Zelensky categorized the charges as “typical Russian fabrications,” intended to rationalize ongoing military assaults on Ukraine. He remarked that Russia itself has previously targeted Kyiv’s government structures.
He called on the international community to remain vocal against Russia’s attempts to sabotage peace efforts. Zelensky highlighted the critical need for global backing to secure enduring peace.
These allegations surfaced shortly after discussions between the US and Ukraine in Florida, where Zelensky and the US President reviewed a fresh strategy to resolve the conflict. Zelensky expressed optimism that the war might conclude by 2026, contingent on sustained US support.
Zelensky expressed skepticism about Putin’s commitment to peace, indicating a lack of trust in the Russian leader and believing that Putin is not genuinely interested in Ukraine's progress.
On security commitments, Zelensky revealed that the US has provided Ukraine with assurances for a duration of 15 years, with an agreement reportedly nearing completion. However, unresolved issues persist regarding territorial disputes, including the status of the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant and the Donbas region.
Currently, Russian forces occupy about 75% of Donetsk and nearly all of Luhansk, which make up Donbas. Moscow has dismissed key elements of the proposed peace framework, complicating the prospects for resolution.
Following the US-Ukraine discussions, the White House revealed a “positive call” between the US President and Putin. A Kremlin advisor noted that Putin expressed concern regarding the alleged drone attack, which happened shortly after what the US termed as a fruitful negotiation session.
The US President stated that he was shocked and angered upon learning about the incident, cautioning that it could significantly influence the US’s stance towards Zelensky. Initially uncertain, he later confirmed that he received intel on the attack from Putin and indicated that inquiries would be conducted.
