On April 25, 2026, the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA) celebrated World Veterinary Day with the theme “Veterinarians: Guardians of Food and Health,” spotlighting the essential role of veterinarians in safeguarding both public and animal health.
The authority underscored the collaborative efforts between veterinarians, technicians, livestock breeders, and the community in providing superior veterinary services aimed at protecting animal welfare and food safety.
ADAFSA’s veterinary teams are tirelessly engaged in delivering medical services and conducting awareness initiatives for breeders to adapt livestock management amid varying climatic conditions, thus enhancing disease control and animal care throughout the emirate.
As part of its ongoing commitment, ADAFSA is executing the 16th Annual Animal Disease and Vaccination Awareness Campaign (2025–2026), which aims to vaccinate approximately 2.4 million sheep, goats, and cattle out of a total livestock of over 3.25 million in Abu Dhabi until the end of April.
This vaccination initiative targets significant diseases such as Peste des Petits Ruminants, Foot and Mouth Disease, and Contagious Caprine Pleuropneumonia, with specialized teams coordinating the effort alongside livestock breeders across all areas.
In addition to the vaccination efforts, ADAFSA has rolled out extensive awareness campaigns to bolster biosecurity practices. Livestock owners are encouraged to isolate sick or newly acquired animals, report unusual symptoms through the toll-free line 800555, and maintain hygiene by regularly disinfecting enclosures.
The authority also advised on the significance of sourcing animals and feed from certified vendors and adhering to proper disposal practices. Health guidelines are in place to prevent zoonotic diseases, emphasizing hygiene among farmworkers and the prohibition of slaughter outside licensed facilities.
ADAFSA pointed out that veterinarians now play an expanded role, contributing to the “One Health” concept that integrates human, animal, and environmental health.
The authority is committed to enhancing veterinary skills through various training programs, scientific endeavors, and state-of-the-art laboratories focused on camel ailments and coronaviruses.
ADAFSA encouraged community members to appreciate the invaluable contributions of veterinary professionals and inspired students to consider careers in veterinary science, highlighting its vital role in food security and sustainable growth.
