Gaza Faces Dire Winter Conditions as Heavy Rains Flood Tents

Post by : Raina Carter

On Tuesday, torrential rains inundated Gaza, tragically worsening conditions for thousands living in temporary shelters. As winter approaches, displaced families, having lost their homes due to years of conflict, are left without adequate protection against the cold.

Nearly two million residents of Gaza have been uprooted since the onset of the protracted conflict following the October 2023 Hamas attack. Though a ceasefire has partially held since mid-October, significant destruction to homes and essential infrastructure has rendered survival exceedingly tough. Many remain in dilapidated tents, no longer able to withstand the elements.

Residents have reported that their refugee sites have turned into veritable swamps. Um Ahmed Aowdah, outside her drenched tent, expressed deep sorrow over their plight, noting how they’ve been without new tents or protective covers for two years, leaving them at the mercy of the rain and upcoming winter storms.

Humanitarian agencies are sounding alarms over a deteriorating situation. The Palestinian NGOs Network has indicated a pressing need for at least 300,000 additional tents to shelter the approximately 1.5 million still displaced throughout Gaza. The Civil Defence Service highlighted that many tents have already been compromised due to the recent downpours.

In certain regions, water levels rose dramatically, washing away entire tents and even halting operations at a field hospital. Medical professionals and local volunteers have been tirelessly working to assist families in salvaging their belongings.

The United Nations is mobilizing efforts to deliver winter supplies to Gaza, although the number of aid trucks permitted into the area is limited. Gaza's authorities accuse Israel of hindering vital aid promised in the ceasefire agreement, while aid organizations state essential provisions remain blocked at entry points. Israel refutes these claims, insisting that aid agencies need to enhance distribution and mitigate theft, a charge Hamas denies.

With winter barely begun, families are apprehensive about the upcoming weeks, fearing more challenges as they await improved shelter, heating provisions, and essential supplies.
