Canada wins gold and silver at the Short Track World Championships in Montreal, with the men’s relay
Canada celebrated a strong finish at the Short Track World Championships in Montreal, winning gold and silver medals on the final day of the competition. The Canadian team secured the gold medal in the men’s 5,000-metre relay and a silver medal in the mixed 2,000-metre relay. Even though Canada finished the event with three medals, the total was lower than last year when the team won ten medals.
The men’s relay team delivered an exciting performance that brought the crowd to its feet. The Canadian quartet of Felix Roussel, Maxime Laoun, Steven Dubois and William Dandjinou crossed the finish line in second place during the race. However, the team from South Korea was later disqualified after referees ruled that their skater had illegally blocked Laoun in the final lap. Because of this decision, Canada moved to first place and won the gold medal. It was a special moment as the Canadian team successfully defended their world title for the second year in a row. Jordan Pierre-Gilles, who competed earlier in the semifinals, was also part of the winning team.
Earlier in the day, Canada came close to winning another gold in the mixed 2,000-metre relay. The team of Florence Brunelle, Danae Blais, Dandjinou and Dubois led the race for much of the early laps. Canada regained the lead with only two laps remaining, but in the final stretch Dubois was passed by Italy’s Pietro Sighel. Italy took the gold medal, while Canada finished with silver and Belgium earned bronze.
Canada’s third medal of the championship came on Saturday when Dubois won gold in the 500-metre race. His performance made him the only Canadian skater to reach the podium in an individual event during the tournament.
In the women’s 1,500-metre final, Canada’s Courtney Sarault finished just outside the medals in fourth place. She was running in second position with three laps to go but briefly lost her balance, allowing two competitors to pass her. Kim Gilli of South Korea won the gold medal, followed by Xandra Velzeboer of the Netherlands and Corinne Stoddard of the United States.
Overall, the Short Track World Championships in Montreal ended with Canada winning three medals and showing strong teamwork in the relay events. Although the medal count was lower than last year, the gold in the men’s relay proved that Canada remains one of the top teams in world short-track speed skating.
