Abu Dhabi Police have reported five cases of suffocation linked to the unsafe use of charcoal and firewood in homes across the UAE, highlighting the dangers of improper winter heating practices.

In all instances, emergency services responded swiftly, ensuring that there were no fatalities. Specialized teams efficiently tackled the cases, demonstrating the police's commitment to public safety during the colder months.

Major General Mohammed Suhail Al Rashdi, head of the Criminal Security Sector, emphasized the severe consequences of using traditional heating methods indoors without proper safety measures. He noted that burning charcoal or wood in closed areas can generate lethal toxic gases.

This warning is part of the winter awareness campaign, “Our Winter is Safe and Enjoyable,” aimed at educating the public on potential hazards, such as suffocation and fire risks arising from unsafe heating practices. Residents are advised to refrain from using firewood, charcoal, or electric heaters indoors unless stringent safety protocols are followed.

The police have urged residents to ensure proper ventilation when using any heating devices and to switch off or extinguish heaters before sleeping or leaving. They also recommend using approved, well-maintained heating systems and regularly checking smoke detectors for safety.

Authorities reaffirmed that community cooperation is vital in averting winter-related incidents, encouraging residents to report dangerous practices to protect lives and properties throughout the UAE.
