As the big day approaches for the 112th Grey Cup, thousands of fans from the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Montreal Alouettes are flocking to Winnipeg, eagerly anticipating the championship match. The city is alive with a vibrant array of Grey Cup festivities.

This weekend isn't just about football; it’s a nationwide event filled with celebration. Fans from all corners of the country have converged to partake in lively parties, concerts, and diverse activities leading up to the highly anticipated championship game on Sunday.

Concerts and Community Fun Await

In downtown Winnipeg at the RBC Convention Centre, a three-day concert series commenced this Thursday, featuring designated areas for fans of each of the nine CFL teams along with lively outdoor gatherings. Just a short walk away, the University of Winnipeg campus is alive with an indoor/outdoor street festival featuring live acts, food stalls, interactive games, and a cheerleading showcase at the Duckworth Centre.

Adding to the festive spirit, Winnipeg’s annual Santa Claus Parade will make its way through downtown on Saturday afternoon, infusing the city with a holiday ambiance just ahead of the climax of Grey Cup celebrations at Princess Auto Stadium on Sunday.

City's Ambitious Celebration Plans

Kenny Boyce, the special events manager for the City of Winnipeg, spoke on the extensive preparations involved in hosting such a monumental celebration. “It’s unpredictable weather, so we ensure the programming is top-notch,” he shared. “Our aim is to design an event that’s safe, affordable, inclusive, and enjoyable for all, with activities available for everyone, including free options.”

The Grey Cup festivities are a boon for local businesses as well. Bars and restaurants throughout Winnipeg are anticipated to see a substantial increase in patrons as fans indulge in dining and takeout while immersed in the festivities.

Winnipeg Economic Development and Tourism's Natalie Thiessen highlighted the event's economic significance, stating, “Grey Cup week is projected to inject approximately $90 million into the local economy. It showcases Winnipeg as an ideal host for large-scale events, and corporate partners can bring clients here to experience our unique offerings.”

Fans Revel in CFL Spirit

Returning Grey Cup attendee Leslie-Anne McKenzie noted that the exhilarating atmosphere is one of the event's main attractions. “It’s about the celebration, the vibe, and reuniting with friends from across Canada,” she expressed. “We’re here to revel in the CFL excitement, particularly with the Riders making it this year. It feels like a perfect getaway for us—it’s incredible.”

Alouettes supporter Kelley McKeating, attending her fourth Grey Cup in Winnipeg and 31st overall, echoed this sentiment. “Winnipeg captures the essence of the event beautifully. It’s large enough for an array of activities but small enough that the Grey Cup maintains its charm. I eagerly await it each year,” she remarked.

Even fans with no horse in the race are relishing the experience. Hamilton Tiger-Cats fan Doreen Bisbee, attending her eighth Grey Cup and the first west of Ontario, praised the welcoming spirit. “The hospitality here is wonderful, with countless things to see and do. It’s truly amazing,” she said.

Players Remain Focused

While the festivities abound for fans, players remain dedicated to their game. Iconic former Blue Bombers offensive lineman Chris Walby stressed the need for mental focus. “It’s time to buckle down. Celebrations can come later; right now is about preparing physically and mentally for the game. Hopefully, everyone gets a good night’s sleep before the big day,” he asserted.

As Winnipeg gears up for the Grey Cup showdown, the city is thriving with music, cuisine, camaraderie, and football fervor, underscoring the Grey Cup's status as one of Canada's premier social gatherings.
