The West Indies have suffered a major setback ahead of their two-match Test series against India, with star fast bowler Alzarri Joseph ruled out due to a back injury. Cricket West Indies (CWI) confirmed that Joseph will be replaced by Jediah Blades, who has previously represented the Caribbean team in ODIs and T20Is.
In addition, senior all-rounder Jason Holder has opted out of the tour to undergo a planned medical procedure. The absence of Joseph and Holder, combined with Shamar Joseph also being ruled out due to an undisclosed injury, significantly weakens the experience and depth of the West Indies squad.
Alzarri and Shamar were crucial in the pace attack during the recent home series against Australia. Along with Jayden Seales, they troubled the Australian batters, highlighting the Caribbean side’s reliance on fast bowling. With Joseph sidelined, it remains uncertain whether the West Indies will maintain a pace-focused strategy or consider a spin-heavy approach against India.
The Test series is set to begin on October 2, with the first match at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad and the second at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. For India, this marks their first home assignment in the new World Test Championship (WTC) 2025–27 cycle. It will also be Shubman Gill’s debut home series as Test captain. The Indian team aims to build momentum after drawing a five-match Test series in England earlier this year and winning the Asia Cup 2025 in Dubai.
India will also look to redeem themselves after a disappointing previous home series in 2024, where they were whitewashed 3-0 by New Zealand. Meanwhile, the West Indies aim to challenge the hosts and make an impact in the WTC cycle, but they now face the tour with a less experienced bowling lineup and a young middle order.
West Indies’ Updated Squad for India Tests:
Roston Chase (c), Jomel Warrican (vc), Kevlon Anderson, Alick Athanaze, John Campbell, Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Justin Greaves, Shai Hope, Tevin Imlach, Jediah Blades, Johann Layne, Brandon King, Anderson Phillip, Khary Pierre, Jayden Seales
The team will need strong performances from the younger players to compensate for the absence of senior bowlers. Fans will be watching closely to see if West Indies can adapt their strategy and mount a competitive challenge against India’s home side.
West Indies’ bowling attack faces a major test as the series approaches, with Joseph, Holder, and Shamar Joseph unavailable. The team’s ability to rely on young talent will be critical for their performance in India.
