IPL 2026 How VIP Culture Led To The Shift Of Final From Bengaluru To Ahmedabad

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has shifted the IPL 2026 final from Bengaluru to Ahmedabad following a major disagreement linked to VIP ticket demands and logistical concerns. The final, originally planned at Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, will now take place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on May 31. The decision has triggered political debate and strong reactions among cricket fans across Karnataka.

According to reports, the main issue involved requests for a large number of complimentary tickets for politicians and government representatives. BCCI officials reportedly faced pressure regarding free ticket allocations for MLAs, MLCs, MPs, and other VIP guests. Since the Chinnaswamy Stadium has a seating capacity of around 40,000, officials believed it would become difficult to manage public ticket sales, sponsor commitments, and VIP demands together.

BCCI vice-president Arun Dhumal explained that Bengaluru was initially expected to host the final because defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru traditionally receive hosting rights for the opening match and final. However, after discussions with the Karnataka State Cricket Association and local authorities, the board decided that the situation had become difficult to manage under existing guidelines and protocols.

Reports claimed that nearly 10,000 additional complimentary tickets were requested beyond the normal quota. The BCCI reportedly considered these demands excessive for a stadium with limited seating availability. Officials also pointed out that IPL finals attract international guests, business partners, sponsors, and ICC officials, increasing the need for a larger venue with better ticket inventory.

The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, which can host more than 1.3 lakh spectators, was seen as a safer and more practical option for such a high-profile event. The stadium has already hosted multiple major cricket finals in recent years, including IPL finals and ICC tournaments. BCCI officials believe Ahmedabad’s larger capacity will allow better crowd management, stronger security arrangements, and improved ticket distribution for fans.

The decision has also created political controversy in Karnataka. Opposition leaders accused the state government of allowing “VIP culture” to damage Bengaluru’s chances of hosting one of the biggest cricket matches of the year. Janata Dal (Secular) youth leader Nikhil Kumaraswamy criticized the growing influence of political pressure in sports administration and said stadiums should prioritize genuine cricket fans instead of privileged access for influential people.

Karnataka government leaders denied that political ticket demands were responsible for the shift. State ministers argued that Ahmedabad’s much larger stadium capacity and commercial advantages likely played a bigger role in the BCCI’s final decision. Officials also said there had been no major security complaints during IPL matches held in Bengaluru this season.

Apart from the VIP ticket issue, reports also mentioned concerns linked to crowd control and safety management after the tragic stampede incident during Royal Challengers Bengaluru celebrations in 2025. Although local cricket authorities claimed they were fully prepared to host the final, BCCI officials reportedly preferred a venue with stronger logistical flexibility and larger infrastructure for the tournament’s biggest match.

The venue shift means Ahmedabad will host the IPL final for the fourth time in the last five years, further strengthening its position as India’s leading stadium for major cricket events. Meanwhile, many Bengaluru fans expressed disappointment on social media, saying the city lost an important sporting opportunity because of unnecessary political interference and VIP demands.
