Vietnam and Russia have reiterated their commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation during key meetings held at the 29th Saint Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF). Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Tuc engaged with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko and top executives from leading Russian firms to explore fresh avenues for economic growth.
During their discussions, Deputy Prime Minister Chernyshenko praised Pham Gia Tuc on his recent appointment and recognized Vietnam as a crucial ally in the Asia-Pacific region for Russia. He underscored the successful trajectory of their bilateral relations and emphasized ongoing efforts in diverse fields such as trade, energy, oil and gas, tourism, culture, science, and education.
A primary emphasis of the dialogue was on advancing long-term strategic initiatives. The Russian delegation suggested enhancing collaboration on significant projects, including energy partnerships, scientific research, educational exchanges, the Ninh Thuan 1 Nuclear Power Plant initiative, and the establishment of the Pushkin Russian Language Center. Both nations reaffirmed their support for initiatives that promise lasting economic returns.
Pham Gia Tuc confirmed Vietnam's commitment to deepening its comprehensive strategic partnership with Russia. He stated that the new Vietnamese government aims to closely work with Moscow to fulfill agreements made by senior leaders and broaden cooperation into new sectors, while also solidifying traditional collaborations.
Despite challenges posed by the global economic landscape, the two parties recognized positive advances in bilateral trade and investment. A 5.7 percent growth in two-way trade is anticipated by 2025, with ongoing cooperation in science, technology, innovation, and higher education witnessing a robust expansion. Additionally, cultural exchanges and tourism have flourished, enhancing people-to-people ties.
The deputy prime ministers resolved to expedite preparations for upcoming high-level exchanges and the 26th session of the Vietnam-Russia Intergovernmental Committee, planned for Vietnam in 2026. The discussion also delved into the potential finalization of a visa exemption agreement for group tourism, which is expected to promote increased travel and business endeavors.
In separate discussions with leaders from VTB Bank, Novatek, and AFK Systema, Russian business representatives conveyed their confidence in Vietnam's economic potential and growth trajectory. Pham Gia Tuc welcomed their interest, emphasizing Vietnam's dedication to fostering a conducive environment for foreign investors, stating that the success of international enterprises in Vietnam directly aligns with the nation’s developmental objectives and economic advancement.
