Vietnam and Philippines Strengthen Economic Partnership

The leaders of Vietnam and the Philippines are set on fortifying their economic alliances, emphasizing the urgency to elevate bilateral cooperation. This commitment was underscored at the Vietnam-Philippines Business Forum in Manila during the State visit of General Secretary and President To Lam.

The event united government officials, business executives, investors, and industry representatives from both nations. General Secretary and President To Lam, alongside Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr., highlighted the necessity of robust economic collaboration amidst shifting global financial landscapes and the changing nature of regional supply chains.

President Marcos Jr. acknowledged Vietnam as one of the Philippines’ key allies in trade, investment, technology, and food security, noting their strong partnership built over 50 years. The upcoming 2026 will mark a significant milestone, celebrating the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties.

In his address, President To Lam pointed to the sustained growth of their bilateral cooperation since the initiation of the Strategic Partnership in 2015, which extended into multiple sectors, including trade, agriculture, tourism, and defense. Both nations agreed to upgrade their relationship to an Enhanced Strategic Partnership, heralding a new era in their cooperation.

He further articulated that economic collaboration should transcend mere trade volume increases, focusing instead on enhancing quality, sustainability, and enduring value generation. To this end, he urged businesses to foster cooperation in areas such as agriculture, fisheries, digital commerce, clean energy, and logistics. Additionally, he advocated for bolstering resilient regional supply chains that can adapt to global economic challenges.

The Vietnamese leader highlighted the importance of bolstering two-way investments and creating joint ventures that offer mutual benefits. Vietnam is dedicated to refining its investment landscape through transparent regulations, enhanced infrastructure, and workforce development to attract foreign investors and ensure conducive business conditions.

Moreover, the forum facilitated notable advancements geared towards strengthening connectivity and economic interactions. Vietjet revealed plans for a new direct flight between Ho Chi Minh City and Cebu, a vital economic and tourism hub in the Philippines. Collaborative agreements across various sectors, including technology, aviation, and innovation, were also established. These initiatives are poised to further economic ties and ensure sustainable growth for both nations in the future.
