Venezuela Claims 100 Casualties from U.S. Military Action Against Maduro

The Venezuelan government has reported that a recent operation by U.S. military forces resulted in 100 deaths, following the removal of President Nicolás Maduro from office. This assertion was made by Diosdado Cabello, the interior minister, on Wednesday, marking the initial official count of those lost during the assault.

This declaration followed a bold military operation early Saturday which saw U.S. personnel storming Caracas in an attempt to capture Maduro and his spouse, Cilia Flores. Both were injured during the raid; Flores reportedly suffered a head trauma while Maduro sustained an injury to his leg.

Prior to this announcement, the Venezuelan military had confirmed the identities of 23 soldiers who lost their lives; however, a complete death toll was only provided following the interior minister's statement. Venezuelan officials indicated that numerous casualties were members of Maduro's protective detail and accused the U.S. military of executing them “in cold blood.” Reports also suggested that Cuban military and intelligence forces stationed in Venezuela were among the deceased.

In light of these deaths, interim President Delcy Rodríguez declared a week of mourning to pay tribute to those who perished during the operation. She commended the devotion of military personnel who lost their lives defending the nation.

While the U.S. has not released comparable casualty data, external reports have varied widely. Some officials have indicated that the number of fatalities could be lower, estimating around 75, including both military and civilian casualties. Nonetheless, the Venezuelan government firmly stands by its figure of 100 deaths.

The resulting fallout from the raid has sparked intense global reactions. Venezuelan authorities issued severe denunciations against the U.S. action, labeling it a breach of sovereignty and international law. Reactions from other countries and leaders reflect widespread apprehension regarding the military intervention and its potential effects on regional security.

The situation remains fluid, with Venezuela enduring significant internal strife post-U.S. operation. The impact of the death toll and political ramifications will likely influence the nation's trajectory for an extended period. Heightened tensions between the United States and Venezuela have emerged, igniting discussions around foreign policy, security, and global standards.
