Intensive Search Underway for US Troops in Morocco

A significant search effort continues as Moroccan and U.S. military forces seek two American soldiers who vanished during collaborative exercises near Morocco’s Atlantic coastline. The operation, which involves over 600 military personnel from several nations, is focused on searching the coastal waters, underwater caves, and rugged shorelines near Tan-Tan in southwestern Morocco.

Military officials report that the two U.S. Army soldiers went missing close to the Cap Draa training area amid the multinational African Lion 2026 military exercise. There’s suspicion that the soldiers may have embarked on a recreational hike before encountering unsafe coastal conditions and potentially falling into the ocean.

Now entering its fifth day, the extensive search has covered more than 45 square kilometers of both ocean and coastline. Officials emphasize that the top priority remains the safe return of the missing soldiers and the safeguarding of all military personnel involved.

The African Lion exercise stands as one of Africa’s largest military drills, organized by the United States in collaboration with various African and international allies. The 2026 drill comprises over 7,000 servicemen from an excess of 30 nations, taking place across Morocco, Tunisia, Ghana, and Senegal.

The Moroccan Navy has disseminated images of military divers exploring underwater caves, while helicopters and surveillance aircraft patrol the coastal zone. Search and rescue teams, alongside canine units, have been spotted sifting through rocky beaches and remote coastal regions.

To assist in the search, several military vessels have been redirected from the exercise; this includes a Moroccan multi-mission frigate and a French support ship. American logistical ships are also aiding in the coordination of rescue efforts.

Air support is integral to the ongoing mission, featuring multiple aircraft including American UC-35 Citation jets, US Army C-12 Huron surveillance planes, and Moroccan Puma and Super Puma helicopters. Authorities have also indicated that drone technology has been deployed to enhance monitoring in challenging search locations.

The identities of the missing soldiers have not been disclosed, though both Moroccan and American officials are ensuring constant communication with their families as rescue operations persist under tough conditions along the Atlantic coast.

This incident has garnered international interest as the African Lion 2026 exercise nears its conclusion this week. Analysts suggest that this situation underscores the robust military collaboration between Morocco, the United States, and their allied nations, particularly in the context of large-scale multinational exercises and emergency response coordination.
