Progress in Lebanon-Israel Peace Negotiations, US Facilitates Talks

The United States has successfully wrapped up two days of vital discussions between Lebanon and Israel at the US Department of State, characterizing the meetings as “very fruitful.”

A statement from the Department of State released on Friday revealed that both nations have formulated a new negotiation framework designed to cultivate lasting peace and stability between them. This framework emphasizes mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, alongside enhancing security along their common border.

Significant advancements were noted regarding the political dialogue, with additional meetings slated for June 2 and June 3.

In conjunction with this agreement, Lebanon and Israel have extended their April 16 cessation of hostilities pact for another 45 days. This extension aims to bolster further developments in security cooperation and communication between the two parties.

The confirmation also mentioned that security discussions are set to commence later this month at the Pentagon, bringing military representatives from both Lebanon and Israel under US supervision to enhance coordination and communication strategies.

The US voiced concerns regarding Hezbollah's ongoing attacks against Israel, labeling these actions as unauthorized by the Lebanese government. Washington warns that such provocations could jeopardize current diplomatic initiatives and potentially disrupt the political dialogue.

Despite facing obstacles, the US acknowledged the determination from both Lebanon and Israel to pursue a long-term resolution. The statement affirmed that Washington will persist in supporting both nations politically and in security matters throughout the upcoming negotiation phase.
