A shocking case from the United States has drawn attention after a man was jailed for killing a seagull in public. The incident happened in July 2024 at a busy beach area in North Wildwood, where families and tourists were present.
The man, Franklin Ziegler, aged 30, attacked the bird after it tried to take French fries from his daughter. According to reports, he decapitated the seagull in front of shocked onlookers near the Surfside Pier at Morey's Piers & Beachfront Waterparks.
Following the incident, Ziegler was arrested and later charged with animal cruelty. He pleaded guilty in court and was sentenced to eight months in jail. His total sentence was 263 days, but he was released earlier after getting credit for time already served. He walked out of Cape May County Jail in February 2026.
Along with the jail term, the court also ordered him to pay a fine of $250 and join a recovery court programme. His lawyer said that he will continue treatment as part of his probation.
The case has upset many animal rights activists. They said the punishment was too light for such a violent act. A senior campaigner from In Defense of Animals called the act cruel and said it happened in front of children, making it even more disturbing.
The US man jailed for killing a seagull case has once again raised concerns about animal cruelty and how such crimes are punished. Many people believe stricter action is needed to stop such incidents in the future
