Winners of the Abu Dhabi Future Health Challenge Unveiled in Geneva

In a landmark event, the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, in partnership with MIT Solve, has unveiled the winners of the first-ever Future Health Challenge.

This announcement was made during a live global pitching event at the World Health Assembly in Geneva, reinforcing Abu Dhabi's commitment to enhancing predictive and preventive healthcare frameworks globally.

Impressive Global Involvement

The challenge received an impressive 393 submissions from 68 nations, demonstrating strong global interest in digital health technologies and AI-integrated healthcare solutions. The endeavor seeks to foster innovations aimed at improving early detection of diseases and bolstering health systems worldwide.

Highlights of the Future Health Challenge Winners

The teams awarded recognized the critical role of technology and data in identifying health risks promptly and refining decision-making in healthcare.

ThinkMD (Australia) – Grand Prize Winner (US$200,000)

ThinkMD equips frontline health workers with mobile clinical decision-support tools. This system facilitates patient triage, treatment, and referrals while also delivering real-time population health data.

Over 9,000 frontline workers across 885 facilities utilize the platform and have successfully identified early outbreak alerts, such as symptom trends related to a cholera outbreak in Zambia.

Vector Control Innovations (USA) – Distinguished Finalist (US$50,000)

This company produced VectorCam, an AI-driven tool for mosquito surveillance that aids in identifying variations in mosquito populations and outbreak risks at earlier stages.

Field studies reveal substantial enhancements in data quality, with reporting accuracy rising from 60% to over 90%, enabling health teams to act more swiftly against disease threats.

Huna (Brazil) – Distinguished Finalist (US$50,000)

Huna employs AI to analyze routine blood test results, targeting those with a higher likelihood of developing cancer at an earlier phase.

In Brazil, its system has screened over 500,000 patients, facilitating the early detection of numerous cancer cases, thereby bolstering treatment outcomes and minimizing long-term healthcare expenses.

The Vision Behind the Challenge

Officials noted that this challenge mirrors a worldwide trend towards early disease detection, as well as prevention and data-driven healthcare practices.

Dr. Asma Al Mannaei from the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi highlighted that many healthcare systems typically identify diseases only after their onset, complicating treatment. She underscored the potential of new technologies to better identify risks early and enhance patient outcomes.

According to MIT Solve Executive Director Hala Hanna, the initiative connects innovators, policymakers, and funders to amplify solutions that are effective within real-world healthcare environments.

Advancing Future Health Innovations

The Future Health initiative is designed to link inventors with funding, partnerships, and global opportunities to scale their innovations. This aligns with Abu Dhabi's goal of becoming a leader in intelligent and preventive healthcare systems.

Finalist representatives will also have the opportunity to present their innovations at the upcoming Abu Dhabi Future Health Summit, scheduled for October 20-22, 2026, which aims to gather global health leaders, policymakers, and investors.
