On Tuesday, the United Nations Security Council issued a firm condemnation regarding the drone strike on the Barakah Nuclear Facility in the United Arab Emirates. The attack was characterized as a grave violation of international law, risking civilian lives as well as critical infrastructure and the environment.
In its official statement, the Security Council called for an immediate cessation of all assaults aimed at civilians and civilian infrastructure within the UAE. They underscored that any threats or attacks against peaceful nuclear facilities are intolerable and jeopardize both regional and global security.
The Council expressed that such an attack undermines fundamental principles essential for maintaining international peace and stability. It emphasized the need for accountability for those behind the strike, including factions operating through proxy networks.
Furthermore, the Security Council reiterated its support for the sovereignty, security, and regional stability of the United Arab Emirates.
Last week, the UAE reported an incident involving six drones launched from Iraq, one of which caused a fire at the Barakah Nuclear Facility, prompting heightened concerns over the safety of nuclear installations in the area.
The Barakah Nuclear Facility is crucial to the UAE’s energy strategy and serves as a significant component of the nation’s peaceful nuclear energy ambitions.
