Sharjah University Board Approves AI Programs and PhD Launches

Sharjah, UAE – His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah (UOS), convened the 60th Board of Trustees meeting at the university campus.

Opening the session, His Highness warmly welcomed board members and commended the institution’s ongoing advancements in academic, research, and administrative disciplines. He noted the significant impact of these efforts on the University of Sharjah’s standing in global rankings across various fields.

Advancing Academic Standards

His Highness praised UOS for upholding high academic standards by continually enhancing its infrastructure and program offerings. He emphasized the need to align courses with global advancements, technological innovations, labor market requirements, and students’ aspirations in the digital age.

Graduation Approvals

The Board approved the graduation of 1,607 students, concluding their studies by the end of Summer Semester 2024–2025 and Fall Semester 2025–2026. This cohort includes:

  • 1,213 Bachelor’s degree recipients

  • 4 Postgraduate diploma recipients

  • 314 Master’s degree graduates

  • 76 Doctoral graduates

New Programs Introduced

In response to workforce dynamics and technological progress, the Board approved several new programs, including:

  • PhD in Artificial Intelligence

  • PhD in Digital Transformation

  • Doctoral Residency in Dentistry

  • MSc in Artificial Intelligence for Biomedical Applications and Healthcare

  • BSc in Artificial Intelligence

  • MSc in Quantum Science and Technology

Establishment of New Centers

The Board authorized the creation of a Center for Artificial Intelligence Applications to enhance research and real-world applications of AI in education and scientific inquiry.

Additionally, a Strategic Partnerships Office will be set up to foster collaborations with local and international institutions, ensuring alignment with the university’s vision and strategic goals.

Governance and Reforms

Several essential academic and administrative reforms were approved, including:

  • A five-year Bachelor’s program in Oral and Dental Medicine and Surgery

  • Revisions to the General Education Curriculum

  • Implementation of an updated governance and organizational structure to foster transparency, accountability, and sound decision-making

The Board also evaluated reports on:

  • Scientific research initiatives and enhancement of the research landscape

  • Introduction of new research centers

  • National and international rankings and accreditations

They discussed the updated University Strategy 2024–2030 (EDGE), centered on four key pillars:

  1. Promoting Emiratisation in both academic and administrative positions

  2. Furthering digital transformation

  3. Bolstering regional and international partnerships

  4. Encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship among students and alumni

Faculty Promotions

The Board sanctioned the promotion of 21 faculty members, consisting of:

  • 11 advancing to Professor

  • 10 elevated to Associate Professor

The meeting concluded with a review of reports concerning external assessments, internal audits, risk management, and Emiratisation initiatives.

Performance Overview

Professor Dr. Esameldin Agamy, Chancellor of UOS, presented a comprehensive performance report, detailing institutional achievements, strategic developments, infrastructure projects, community outreach, and engagement with both local and international partners.

Attendance

The meeting gathered senior officials and academic leaders from across the UAE and beyond, featuring representatives from prestigious institutions such as the University of Ottawa, MIT, Stanford University, National University of Singapore, University of Malaya, McMaster University, University of Leicester, and Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology.
