Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has introduced a comprehensive humanitarian initiative dedicated to the eradication of river blindness, a condition that plagues millions globally. The program, which is being launched in Dubai, will be executed under the auspices of Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives in collaboration with Noor Dubai. Officials estimate that this initiative will provide direct assistance to approximately seven million individuals, with an indirect impact on over 35 million people over the next three years.
The announcement took place during a prestigious gathering attended by various senior figures of Dubai’s ruling elite and high-ranking government officials, including Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, Maktoum bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, and Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Maktoum. The event underscored the UAE’s commitment to international healthcare and humanitarian endeavors.
During his address, Sheikh Mohammed emphasized the essential role of humanitarian work as a core value for the UAE. He pointed out that aiding individuals in regaining their health and dignity is a universal obligation, highlighting that effectively combating blindness equates to alleviating suffering, disability, and poverty. He also assured that the UAE will persist in unveiling humanitarian initiatives that enhance lives and assist vulnerable populations worldwide.
River blindness, or onchocerciasis, is a debilitating condition that affects both ocular health and skin integrity, caused by parasitic worms carried by infected blackflies. It can result in severe itching, skin lesions, visual impairment, and, in extreme cases, total blindness if left unaddressed. Particularly among children, early stages of infection can sometimes trigger neurological issues, including epilepsy. This disease predominantly impacts communities in certain regions of Africa, as well as select localities in Latin America and Asia.
Through the newly unveiled initiative, Noor Dubai will oversee extensive medicine distribution efforts aimed at both prevention and treatment. The organization is also set to execute community health assessments and train local healthcare professionals to recognize early-stage infections. Officials stated that this program aligns with the global objective of entirely eliminating river blindness by 2030, in accordance with the World Health Organization’s action plan for neglected tropical diseases.
In recent years, the UAE has been pivotal in elevating global awareness around neglected tropical diseases. The country has significantly contributed to the recognition of World Neglected Tropical Disease Day, celebrated annually on January 30, which was officially acknowledged by the World Health Organization in 2021, largely attributed to UAE diplomatic efforts. The nation continues to invest heavily in global healthcare initiatives through various humanitarian organizations and international collaborations.
Established in 2015, the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives oversees more than 30 humanitarian and developmental projects across sectors such as healthcare, education, innovation, and disaster response. Since its inception, the organization has reportedly provided humanitarian aid valued at billions of dirhams, assisting hundreds of millions globally. Noor Dubai, specifically, has helped over 33 million beneficiaries in Asia and Africa through initiatives aimed at preventing blindness, treatment programs, awareness campaigns, and mobile health services.
