The Zayed National Museum has unveiled the UAE's groundbreaking part-time Associate Conservator Diploma in collaboration with the UK’s West Dean College. This initiative is further backed by the Mubadala Foundation.

This new programme addresses the increasing need for skilled conservation experts within the UAE. It focuses on equipping current and aspiring professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to adhere to global and ethical standards in the preservation of cultural artifacts and collections.

Dr. Peter Magee, Director of Zayed National Museum, stated that this initiative aligns with the museum’s commitment to safeguarding and understanding UAE heritage. The curriculum combines theoretical study with hands-on experience, empowering participants to enhance their professional abilities while fostering the long-term stewardship of heritage collections nationwide.

Designed through a collaborative, interdisciplinary framework, the diploma integrates scientific principles with practical training opportunities. It's accessible to individuals with backgrounds in heritage, archaeology, conservation, or similar disciplines, and those currently employed in the cultural sector are also encouraged to apply.

Alya Al Hosani, Executive Director – Community Affairs at Mubadala, remarked that this programme is a pivotal development in cultivating specialized expertise in the cultural landscape. She emphasized its role in nurturing local talent and contributing to a robust cultural ecosystem in the UAE.

The education format will be hybrid, featuring on-site classes at Zayed National Museum, online learning, and a four-week internship within UAE's cultural institutions.

The inaugural year of the course is set to commence from August 2026 through January 2027, spanning three intensive learning blocks, scheduled for: August 31–September 18, 2026, October 26–November 13, 2026, and January 11–22, 2027.

Professor Laura Peters from West Dean College expressed enthusiasm for the programme, which aims to furnish students with vital technical skills and critical insights essential for conservation endeavors. She is looking forward to this partnership and the opportunities it will provide for future conservation professionals.

Applications for this programme will be accepted until June 2026, with a limited number of spots available. Early applications are recommended, and interested candidates may also indicate their interest in future sessions scheduled over the next two years.
