UAE's Major AI-Driven Copyright Enforcement Sees 13,667 Sites Blocked in Q1 2026

Post by : Bianca Hayes

In the first quarter of 2026, the UAE Ministry of Economy and Tourism took decisive action by blocking 13,667 websites violating copyright. This remarkable achievement highlights a nearly 400% rise from last year’s figures.

Since its inception in February 2025, the InstaBlock Lab has successfully shut down a total of 47,667 illegal sites. This AI-powered system vigilantly observes digital platforms in real time, enabling rapid responses to copyright infringement claims associated with creative content and digital broadcasting.

Dr. Abdulrahman Hassan Al Muaini, the Assistant Undersecretary overseeing Intellectual Property, emphasized how this initiative demonstrates the UAE's commitment to safeguarding intellectual property. Additionally, it lays the foundation for a secure digital landscape that fosters innovation and enhances the nation’s competitiveness on the global stage.

Collaboration with partner organizations such as Abu Dhabi Media Network, MBC Shahid, OSN, Yango Play, STARZPLAY, the Brand Owner Council, and Nissan Middle East has strengthened these efforts, particularly as enforcement intensified during Ramadan in response to an uptick in broadcasting infringements. The number of blocked sites surged from 62 in 2023, reaching 1,117 in 2024, escalating to 2,217 in 2025, and finally 5,677 in 2026.

In addition to enforcement strategies, there is a persistent focus on raising awareness among the public regarding the importance of utilizing only licensed and authorized sources for digital content. These initiatives align with the ambitious “We the UAE 2031” vision, aimed at reinforcing the knowledge-based economy and enhancing the nation’s profile in protecting digital content.
