In a major milestone for electric air mobility, the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) of the UAE has advanced the Archer Midnight eVTOL aircraft toward operational readiness.
Archer Aviation is now the first eVTOL maker to join the GCAA’s Restricted Type Certificate programme, enabling limited commercial activities while adhering to rigorous safety and regulatory protocols.
This advancement follows years of collaboration between the regulator and Archer, involving numerous technical inspections of the manufacturer’s facilities in the United States, as well as in-country testing of the Midnight aircraft.
As part of the certification journey, key approvals such as Design Organization Approval and Production Organization Approval have been initiated by the GCAA, reflecting confidence in Archer’s engineering, safety measures, and production standards.
Aqeel Al Zarooni, Assistant Director-General for Aviation Safety Affairs at GCAA, affirmed the authority's dedication to the safe incorporation of innovative aviation technologies into UAE airspace.
The program encompasses eight essential areas, including aircraft certification, operational standards, maintenance, training for flight crews, airspace planning, vertiport creation, security measures, and regulatory compliance.
The Midnight eVTOL is poised to commence its initial operations in Abu Dhabi, collaborating with the local operator Abu Dhabi Aviation. This aircraft is engineered for short-distance urban air mobility, aiming to expedite travel times within the city.
This initiative marks a pivotal step toward realizing the UAE’s ambition of becoming a global leader in advanced air mobility and cutting-edge aviation technologies.
